Jimmy’s was one of the smaller places Trey’s family frequented, but it had just about everything you could ever need. Which was fortunate, because by the time he left the house, he’d been given a veritable grocery list of drinks and snacks to procure. He’d been about to protest on the grounds of brokedom when Ayesha tugged out a couple crinkly twenties and said it was her treat.

Then, Pete had offered to drop Trey off on his way to run a quick errand. He said he’d be back in time to give them a ride to school, if they wanted. Trey doubted they’d need it, but thanked him anyway. Now, handbasket full, Trey stood in the candy aisle trying to decide if he was in more of a Kit-Kat or Twix mood.

Bing-bong. The door chimed when it opened, and the dull roar of the street came through the bodega briefly.

“Hello, welcome in!” Jimmy’s mom was behind the counter today. Nice lady, always giving kids on the block discounts if they brought in good grades. “Let me know if you need anything.”

“We’re looking for someone,” a woman said, her voice low, sultry. As she spoke, a chill moved through Trey.

It started with a burning sensation at the top of his head, then poured down over the rest of his body with a familiarity that sparked fear in some deep, primal part of his mind.

“No way,” he whispered, and ducked to try and get a look through the shelves. He could just make out the front counter, where a white woman with red hair stood with her back to Jimmy’s mom. A buff, bald white dude loomed beside her, both of them wearing white suits.

The stab of fear sharpened to a razor’s edge.

“Who?” Jimmy’s mom asked.

The woman removed her glasses and let her gaze roam over the small space, her head moving back and forth slowly. She said, “A young man, African American. Answers to Terrance or Trey.”
